Vocal doubler

Goal

Create a free plug-in that a musician/producer at any skill level could use. The primary use is self-explanatory, make a recording of one person sound like multiple people. We wanted there to be one primary control, an audio-reactive element, and animation that would bring it all to life.

Vocal Doubler is a free plugin that sits somewhere between a technical and creative tool. To reflect this, we chose colors that lied between our engineer-focused Nectar 3 and our limitlessly powerful VocalSynth 2.

Inspiration

Instead of cluttering the UI with knobs, we wanted the primary control to be clear. Inspired by Sketch's radial gradient controls, we landed on a semicircular node that could be moved on an X and Y plane at the same time.

Visual

Node can adjust width & variation at the same time.
Rings spread out to visualize the sound's width.
Rotation of rings signify variation in duplicated voices.

Spec

Learn - Education is important at iZotope so we included links to helpful blog articles.
Bypass - Easily A/B what the plugin is doing and see how you like the results.
Accessible - Readouts for the two controls are available for easy keyboard use.
Final Touch - Dial in the amount you want mixed in or even use the duplicated voices only.
Vocal Doubler successfully released and is one of iZotope's most downloaded free plugins to date. It's reactive visuals, dead simple control, and tweak-ability make it a standout product.
