Spire

Goal

Introduce the ability to add FX to Spire, iZotope's mobile audio recording app. The FX needed to be a powerful, painless workflow and enjoyable experience for musicians jamming on the go.

Tools

01

Color & Iconography

Amps
Spaces
To easily distinguish between FX types, we used icons and animated backgrounds for each respective category. Only using two colors was intentional to leave room for other unique colors for future categories.

02

Guidelines & Inspiration

We looked carefully into Apple's Human Interface Guidelines to ensure we were following the correct paradigms. At the same time, popular apps like Instagram inspired us with their effortless photo gallery feature.

03

Prototype

Click-through prototypes didn't suffice for the level of interaction & animation we had in mind. I learned how to use Facebook's Origami Studio and created a fully interactive prototype that nearly replicated every aspect of final functionality and behavior.

04

Spec

Tap or Swipe - Give users the option to cycle through  FX & categories whichever way they prefer.
Reset to Default - Including a reset button gives users confidence to tinker around.
Page Indicator - Sets expectations for how many FX you can try out.
Confirm or Cancel - Once they're happy with their sound, they can apply and start recording.
The Spire team rolled out its initial set of 8 unique FX and add more with regular updates. The simple interactions, colorful visuals, and unique icons help inspire people recording on the go.
